Carbon Dioxide Pouring

Today we decided to see if we could pour a gas: carbon dioxide, to be exact.  I thought that we would be able to.

Here's what we did: We took two sandwich-sized bags and taped them to the opposite ends of a ruler.  Then we balanced the ruler on another one so the bags were on the ends of ruler number one. ;}

We measured out three teaspoons of baking soda and about a half cup of vinegar.

Liam poured the vinegar into the pitcher with the baking soda and it bubbled up!

Then I poured the gas that the mixture had made into one of the bags.  The first time, Juliet did it and it fell on the floor because she accidentally poured a bit of the liquid into the bag.  The second time, I did it and poured so much gas in that the bags fell off the balance.  The third time, I did it again but it only tilted a little bit and it didn't fall off again.

Want to know why the bag tilted?  When I poured from the pitcher, the carbon dioxide weighed the bag down on that side of the scale.  There was air in the other bag.  So we know carbon dioxide is heavier than air.  So even though it looked like I was pouring nothing, the scale told us I was....

Bacteria Experiment

Research Question:  Does bacteria grow on honey?

Hypothesis:  No bacteria grows on honey.

Materials:
3 bowls, brown sugar, honey, water, Q-tip swab from a nose, plastic wrap and bread

Procedure:
  1. We put sugar and water in one bowl, honey and water in a second bowl, and in the third bowl we put in just water.
  2. The Q-tip swab rubbed around inside the nose.
  3. The Q-tip swab was then stirred around in bowl #1 (water).
  4. Steps 2 and 3 were repeated for bowl #2 (water and sugar) and #3 (water and honey).
  5. Plastic wrap was put over bowls 1, 2, and 3 and they were labeled and put on a tray.
  6. Wait for 15 days.
  7.  We wrote down three observations.
 Our Materials Day 0
 Water Control Day 2:
Observations:  nothing in the water
 Water and Sugar Day 2:
Observations:  little blob in the water/sugar
 Water and Honey Day 2:
Observations:  little blob in the water/honey

Day 10:  Observations:
nothing has changed.
Change in procedure:  put bread into each bowl to enhance the medium.

Day 10:  water and honey
Day 10:  water and brown sugar
 Day 10:  water control
Day 15:  Liam making observations
 Day 15:  Water control:
Observations:  You can hardly see any growth of bacteria.
 Day 15:  Water and sugar:
Observations:  Sugar has the second most amount of bacteria.
 Day 15: Water and honey:
Observations:  Honey has the most amount of bacteria.

Conclusions:  does bacteria grow on honey?  Yes, bacteria does grow on honey.

Our hypothesis, that bacteria does not grow on honey, is false.

Celery vasculature

A few days ago we did a celery experiment. When the water evaporates from the leaves through stomata, it creates suction.  The suction pulls the water up to the leaves through pipes in the stalk.
then it evaporate.  It's part of the water cycle!

In the second part of the experiment, we split the stalk.  Then we put the two sides in two different colors of water, red and green.  While the leaves were still green, we drew a picture of the plant.  We waited a day to see what happened.
can you see green?
 can you see red?
this is the stalk filled with veins.
the veins are filled with food coloring and water.
the plant looks like a tree.
Here are the entrances to the pipes.

Tubing in Mont Tremblant

When we visited the Mont Temblant area in Quebec, one thing we did was go tubing for a day.  It was really fun, except for the part when I got really soaked.  There were very big puddles at the bottom of the hill.  And we went into one of the biggest!  It was horrible.  Luckily, Juliet had brought two of her socks (I'm almost her size) and an extra pair of pants.  I kept tubing with all the clothes she had brought.  Otherwise it was all perfect.
I love the part of this video where my hair is going crazy.
